Unforgiveness
September 1st, 2009 by adminMany of us have problems forgiving those that have hurt us. There is no one on the face of this earth that has not been wronged or hurt by someone. This can have a tragic effect on our lives both emotionally and spiritually if not dealt with according to what the Bible says to do.
We must come to terms with the need to fully forgive these people. Unforgiveness can keep us in bondage to the enemy and the torment the enemy brings. Jesus forgives us and we must forgive EVERYONE that has ever done anything to us. Matthew 6:14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: Matthew 6:15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
We are commanded to forgive others. Many feel they do not need to or feel they are too good to or they feel the person does not deserve to be forgiven. We are not better then Jesus and He forgives us so we must forgive others. We also need to forgive ourselves. Unforgiveness of self will also hold us in bondage and torment of the enemy.
Let’s look at a passage about the unforgiving servant and see what happens when we don’t forgive. Please take note of verse 18 as this is the key to understanding the importance of the power of forgiveness.
Matt 18:18-35
“18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. 21 ¶ Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. 23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. 24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. {talents: a talent is seven hundred and fifty ounces of silver, at a hundred and eleven cents the ounce} 25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. {worshipped him: or, besought him} 27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. 28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. {pence: the Roman penny is the eighth part of an ounce, which after five shillings the ounce is seven pence halfpenny; about fourteen cents} 29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. 31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. 32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: 33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? 34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.”
This servant was forgiven but he chose to go after one of his servants. He had no right to do this after he was forgiven of all his debts. Notice he ended up being delivered over to the tormenters. The tormenters are the demons that Satan sends to wreak havoc in our lives. When we don’t forgive and choose to hold bitterness and grudges towards people, we open the door to the enemy to come in and make us miserable.
Verse 18 says, “18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
This verse is oftentimes misunderstood. The true meaning of it is that our actions here on earth cause reactions in the heavenlies and they effect things here on earth. When you do not forgive, you bind yourself up by opening the door to the tormenters. When we forgive, we loose ourselves from the hands of the enemy.
Forgiveness is not a feeling, it’s a choice that we make by our own free will. It is hard sometimes to forgive others but we must do so. Being able to let go and forgiving them is part of the healing process. You will feel better when you do.
Keep in mind that we’re not any better than our Lord who died on the cross for all of our sins. He set the example when he said while hanging on the cross, “Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.”
When the disciples asked Jesus how they should pray, He gave them yet another example of forgiveness. Matthew 6:12 “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” The Lord will not forgive us when we choose to hold grudges against people and when we don’t forgive we are in sin and must be forgiven as well. We need to make a conscious choice not based on how we feel to forgive so that we can also be forgiven for the sin we committed when we chose not to forgive.
We also must forgive ourselves for the things we have done in our lives both big and small. When we hold ourselves in unforgiveness, we allow ourselves to become miserable and tormented with many ungodly thoughts and also open the door to the enemy’s attacks on our lives. We need to shut this door. Again it’s a choice we make to forgive ourselves and stop beating ourselves up for the things we have done.
Many times people feel they cannot be forgiven of their sins and they cannot forgive themselves. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. He chooses to forgive us and we simply need to make a choice to except His forgiveness and realize we were wrong but can be forgiven if we just ask Jesus to forgive us. The enemy would want for us to think we cannot be forgiven because we may have done some really bad things. The enemy speaks these kinds of lies to us all the time in hopes of getting us down. The answer to this constant lie that is thrown at us is 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. This verse can shut down all the lies the enemy throws at us about how awful we may be for the things we have done. Once one prays that prayer of repentance to turn away from sin and asks to be forgiven, Jesus instantly forgives us simply because we asked Him to and because He loves us.
So when you start thinking about how awful you might be and how you cannot be forgiven, remember 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Quote it to the enemy every time he throws those darts at you. If we pray and ask to be forgiven and we mean it with a sincere heart, it is done.
