Can Christians Have Demons

September 1st, 2009 by admin

The answer is yes!! Here is why.

Many people say the following statements which I will show you are biblically untrue.

Light can’t exist with darkness. Jesus lives in us. We are covered in the blood. Your past is washed away. The old is made new, old sins are gone they mean nothing. People don’t have to remember anything; it’s better left forgotten.. and kept in the past

Let’s look at each one of these.

There are three parts of us, the spirit, the soul (mind, thoughts, emotions and the flesh). 1 Thes 5:23 says “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”. Matt 26:41 and Mark 14:38 both say “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” These show us that we have a spirit, soul and flesh to deal with. The spirit can affect the soul or flesh and the flesh can affect the spirit and soul and so on. Heb 4:12 talks about the dividing of soul and spirit. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and savior, He takes over our spirit and lives there. Demons cannot live in the spirit of a Christian. But they still can live in our soul and flesh. 1 Cor 5: says “deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” This also shows us that our spirit is separated from our flesh and our spirit needs to be saved. This shows that our flesh can be occupied by demons.

In the following passages, the writers are referring to Christians.

Eph 4:17 This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; 19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20 But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. 26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 Nor give place to the devil.

*******
This was written to CHRISTIANS. If we as CHRISTIANS could not be effected by the devil and his demons/spirits, then why were these things spoken to CHRISTIANS. Some things are listed here that the devil can attack us with and were being warned about them for a reason.
*********
Read the entire chapter.

Eph 4:28 -32 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.

James 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Here we are told to Submit to God and RESIST the devil. If the devil/satan could not bother us then we would not be told this.

1 Peter 5: 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. AGAIN THIS CHAPTER IS TALKING TO CHRISTIANS. Read the whole chapter.

Here the Lord talks to Satan about HIS servant JOB who was attacked in many ways. Job was a servant of God not a non believer. Here you will see the Lord tell Satan He is allowing him to attack Job.

Job 1: 8 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?” 9 So Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 “Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 “But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!” 12 And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.”

Satan asks for Simon who is one of God’s servants.

Luke 22:31 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat

A non-believer goes to Jesus about her daughter who is plagued with demons.

Mark 7:24-30 says “From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden. For a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and fell at His feet. The woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.” Then He said to her, “For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” And when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed.” This shows us that we have to be a believer before some one can cast a demon out of us. Jesus said so himself.

Here is the above story told slightly different in Matt 15:21-28 “Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.” This tells us that Jesus was sent for the lost sheep of Israel (children of Abraham). His children, those who would accept them as Lord and savor). Gal 3:7 ” Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.(spiritually)”

Now here are some examples of Christians that had demons.

Acts 19:11-12 “Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.” Now look at the context of this. These handkerchiefs and aprons were sent to believers who were asking for prayer to be healed. A non-believer would not be asking Paul for prayer.

Matt 16:23 “But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” Here Jesus told Satan (or a demon) that was in Peter to get behind him. Peter was a believer who was being bothered by a demon in him trying to tempt Jesus.

John 13:26-28 “”Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him”” Jesus = bread. This explains itself. Here is another occasion where Judas had Satan in him. Luke 22:3 reads “Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.” Hmm one of the twelve. Could this be one of the twelve disciples of Jesus who had a demon in him????

Acts 5:1-3 “But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?” Ananias was a new convert who had a demon in him making him lie to the Holy Spirit. Start reading from Acts 4:32 and read all the way through Acts 5:3 to understand what took place.

2 Cor 12:7 says that Paul who wrote at least half of the New Testament had a demon in him. “And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.” The word buffet means a tormenting spirit. Now we all know that Paul was a believer and a dedicated child of God.

Gal 4:8-10 “But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods. But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? You observe days and months and seasons and years.” This says that we as Christians can still be in bondage as believers and be tormented by demons living in our soul and flesh.

When Jesus commissioned believers to cast out demons, he did not say to cast them out of the lost but to cast them OUT (take out of some one not take off of some one) but to cast them out of those who are able to have the Holy Spirit. See the story in Mark 7:25-30 and look again at what Jesus said to the mother of the demonized daughter. “For a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and fell at His feet. The woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.” Then He said to her, “For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” And when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed”.

If one does not have the Holy Spirit with them demons can return. Matt 12:43-45 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, “I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.” If a person does not have the Holy Spirit it severs no purpose to cast demons out of them. It will only make them worse in the long run.

If you have issues with addiction, abuse of any kind (past or present), bad things happening in your family lines, habits that bother you that you have tried to break, any thing you have been praying about and asking others to pray about for a long time and nothing is happening, chronic illness, past involvement with the occult, past involvement with witchcraft, been into astrology, horoscopes, the ouigi board, séances and anything else that is not of God; you need deliverance and inner healing.

The Difference between possession and oppression

Possession is when the persons spirit is completely taken over by a demon or demons. Oppression is when there is demonic influences by demons.

What are the scriptural basis for Christians dealing with demons?
Jesus dealt with them during His ministry here on earth. He also commissioned us believers to deal with them. Take a look at the following scripture references to where Jesus dealt with demons during His ministry.

Matthew 17:15-18,21 “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.” Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

Matthew 15:21-28h “Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.”

Matthew 8:28-34 “When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?” Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine feeding. So the demons begged Him, saying, “If You cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of swine.” And He said to them, “Go.” So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and perished in the water. Then those who kept them fled; and they went away into the city and told everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region.”

Matthew 8:16 “When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick”

Mark 1:21-27 “Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are–the Holy One of God!” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. hen they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”

Jesus’ command and commission for us to deal with demons

Matthew 10:1,8 “ And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.”
